It contains restricted amounts of phosphorus as this mineral can build up in kidney patients and has been shown to contribute to progression of the disease.

The diet also contains limited amounts of high-quality protein to help minimise development of the protein breakdown products (uraemic toxins) which make patients feel unwell while helping to maintain muscle mass. Omega-3 fatty acids help to enhance natural anti-inflammatory processes and minimise increases in blood pressure inside the kidney.
