Ferguson Dog Food

11 products

Ferguson is grain-free dry dog food made in the UK from British ingredients. It splits into two ranges: the 80/20 high protein recipes, and the single protein adult range. Which one suits your dog depends more on how active they are than on flavour.

The two ranges

The 80/20 recipes are Original, Fine Fish and Farmland. Original is 80% poultry and fish, 18% vegetables, and runs 38% protein. That's the same protein level as Orijen, at a lower price per kilo, which is the comparison our customers make most often when they switch.

The single protein range gives one animal protein per recipe: Scottish salmon, Angus beef, British free range chicken or grass fed lamb. Puppy, senior, light and small breed recipes all sit here.

Who Ferguson suits

Working dogs, gundogs and anything genuinely active does well on the 80/20 recipes. The protein is there to be burned.

The single protein range is the one for dogs with a suspected food sensitivity. Every recipe is free from wheat, gluten, dairy and soy, so you can narrow down to one protein and see what happens. Worth saying: it only works if you're strict about it, including treats.

Every recipe includes glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM for joints, and MOS and FOS prebiotics for digestion. Those usually cost extra as supplements.

Getting the portions right

Ferguson Original is 385 kcal per 100g. A 20 to 30kg adult dog needs roughly 230 to 315g a day. Weigh it for the first fortnight rather than guessing, particularly if you're coming off a lower protein food.

Who Ferguson isn't for

The 80/20 recipes are too rich for a quiet, older or overweight dog. If that's yours, the single protein adult recipes or the Salmon Light are the better buy, and they cost less.

There's no wet Ferguson, so this is dry feeding. Look at wet dog food if you like to mix.

And if your dog has a diagnosed condition your vet has put them on a prescription diet for, stay on it. Ferguson is good food, but it isn't a veterinary diet.
