Ramsay Originals is dry dog food made in the UK with no added wheat or gluten. It comes in two ranges: Grain-Free and Wheat-Gluten Free. Chicken & Potato runs 28% protein and 40% chicken. This is everyday food for ordinary dogs, and most dogs do perfectly well on it.
Grain-Free or Wheat-Gluten Free
The Grain-Free recipes use sweet potato and potato instead of grain, and each one has a single animal protein: chicken, lamb or salmon. That matters if you're trying to work out what your dog reacts to.
The Wheat-Gluten Free recipes use rice. They're free from wheat and gluten but they aren't grain-free. For a dog with no diagnosed grain problem, that's usually all you need.
Between them there are puppy, senior, small breed and large breed recipes, plus turkey in the rice range.
What hypoallergenic actually means here
It means no added wheat or gluten, which helps a lot of dogs with itchy skin or loose stools. It does not mean allergen-free.
If your vet has identified a protein your dog reacts to, read the ingredients rather than the front of the bag. A dog who reacts to chicken will react to a chicken recipe whatever else is in it. The single protein Grain-Free recipes in lamb or salmon are the sensible place to start, and if you're running a proper elimination diet, speak to your vet first.
Getting the portions right
Chicken & Potato is 377 kcal per 100g. A 12 to 25kg dog needs roughly 188 to 326g a day. That's a wide range because it depends heavily on how much exercise your dog actually gets, so start in the middle, weigh it, and adjust after a fortnight.
Who Ramsay Originals isn't for
Working dogs, gundogs and dogs in hard condition need more protein than this. Ferguson or Acana are the better fit, and they cost accordingly.
It isn't a veterinary diet either. If your vet has prescribed something for a diagnosed condition, stay on it.
And there's no wet Ramsay, so this is dry feeding. Look at wet dog food if you like to mix.
