Large breed recipes are built for dogs of roughly 25kg and up. Bigger kibble, moderated fat, and joint support in most of them. Almost all of it is dry food in large bags, because that's what feeding a big dog economically looks like.
The puppy recipes are the part that actually matters
For an adult big dog, a large breed recipe is a convenience. For a large breed puppy it isn't.
Big dogs that grow too quickly, or take in too much calcium while their joints are still forming, carry a higher risk of skeletal problems later, including hip and elbow trouble. These recipes are built to slow growth rather than push it.
So if you've a Labrador, German Shepherd, Retriever or anything heading past about 25kg, use a large breed puppy food rather than a standard one. And resist the urge to fatten them up. Lean and slow is what you want while they're growing, however wrong that feels at the time.
Several brands add a junior stage between puppy and adult, because big dogs finish growing later than small ones. Follow the age guidance on the bag rather than moving them across on their first birthday.
What large breed adult food actually changes
Three things. Kibble is bigger, so a dog that inhales its dinner has to chew. Fat is usually moderated, because a big frame carrying extra weight is harder on the joints. And most have joint support built in.
All useful. None of it essential. A good standard adult food at the right portion will keep most big dogs perfectly well, and our dry dog food range is cheaper per kilo. If your dog is doing fine on what they're on, there's nothing here to fix.
Feed twice a day rather than once
Two smaller meals suit a big dog better than one large one, and it's worth leaving an hour either side of hard exercise.
Ring your vet straight away, day or night, if a big dog seems suddenly restless and uncomfortable, is trying to be sick without bringing anything up, or looks swollen or tight around the tummy. That combination in a large, deep-chested dog is an emergency and it doesn't wait until morning.
Buying for a dog that eats a lot
Almost everything here comes in large bags, and per kilo that's much the cheaper way to feed a big dog.
Once a bag is open the fat starts to go off, so keep it in an airtight bin rather than rolled shut. A large bag that goes stale costs more than a small one that doesn't.
