Hay first, then food
For a rabbit or guinea pig, hay is the diet. Nuggets are the top-up rather than the meal.
An animal that fills up on nuggets eats less hay, and hay is what keeps the teeth worn down and the gut moving. Buy it in the biggest bag you've room for and keep it somewhere dry.

Nuggets rather than muesli
Where you've a choice, take a single-piece nugget food over a muesli mix.
In a muesli mix the animal picks out the bits it likes and leaves the rest, which is usually the fibre. With nuggets there's nothing to pick out, so they get the whole recipe in every mouthful. Supreme Selective is the nugget range we stock most of.
Paper bedding or wood shavings?
Paper bedding is soft, very absorbent and composts afterwards. It suits hamsters and gerbils, who want something they can burrow into and nest with. Carefresh and Back 2 Nature are the paper ones.
Wood shavings are considerably cheaper by the litre and are the sensible choice for lining a hutch floor. Chipsi do the shavings, and a hemp mat if you want something firmer underfoot.
Buy fewer treats than you think
We list more kinds of treat than we do food, and treats are the thing to buy least of. A rabbit or guinea pig eating properly doesn't need one every day, and the sugary ones aren't doing them any favours.
One forage tray or a willow ball lasts a good while and gives them something to work at, which is the bit that actually helps.
When it's a vet, not a purchase
If a small pet goes off its food, stops passing droppings, or sits hunched and still, ring your vet the same day.
Rabbits and guinea pigs go downhill quickly and hide it well. There is nothing on this page that helps with that, and waiting to see costs you time you haven't got.
What a normal order looks like
Three things: hay, a bag of nuggets, and bedding. That's the weekly shop and it's what most people here are buying.
Toys and treats are the extras. Add one at a time rather than a basketful, and you'll find out quickly which ones actually get used.
